              | May 3, 1944 - Arrival in Penarth Penarth, Wales

"...Been traveling once again and am now in
balmy but nice country. Overjoyed above all to be here cause I sure
believe I'm going to like this place a lot. Better tell you where
this paradise is I guess eh! What? Well I have hunch you'd never guess
so I reckon my being in the British Isles should prove a surprise.
Just think; over here one doesn't have to learn the language...Had
one liberty already and though it was short, I had a better time in
those few hours than I had in all the time I'd spent in Africa. Italy,
wasn't bad I guess but rather filthy...Really I'm happy to be here
so far and hope it doesn't change. Paradise after being in some of
the places I'd been. Right at this moment I'm in the conning tower
and looked out of the porthole. Oh! Houses and trees that are clean
              for a change..."
